As many of you know it was Halloween on Friday 31st October.

Here at the nursery we had a “spooky” party in the afternoon and the children dressed up and made pumpkin pictures and carved out a couple of pumpkins themselves.

Little Jogs Fun Day

Local families flocked to the Little Jogs Fun Day in September to enjoy the Pheonix Brass Band, stalls, cakes and wonderful cream teas.

The local ambulance service kindly bought along an ambulance for the children to look at close up, and they enjoyed looking around it and watching the lights flashing. It made everyone jump when the sirens went on, they do need to be loud!

As the photos below show, it was a most enjoyable afternoon for everyone who came along.

Hungerford Carnival

Little Jogs had a fabulous time at the Hungerford Carnival, as these photos show. The beach party was in full swing and the sun came out to add to the tropical ambience!

Ghanaian inspired garden project

A Ghanaian inspired garden project has been undertaken at Little Jogs.

The joint project between John O’Gaunt and Little Jogs is now well underway. Construction of the ‘keyhole’ garden has now been completed by John’O'Gaunt and all that remains is for Little Jogs children to plant the garden.

Be Seen Be Safe

Little Jogs held a ‘Safety Day’ on Tuesday 28th April to help the children stay safe when they are out and about in Hungerford. PC Claire Drewitt, Hungerford Neighbourhood officer, came along to talk to the children about what the police do and how they help them stay safe. The children all enjoyed hearing about the different roles that the police have and seeing the pictures of police dogs, horses and the helicopter.

PC Drewitt said, “The children were all very attentive to my input today and it’s great to be working to educate them in such a positive way.” The highlight of the trip was when the children went outside to the police car and were allowed to sit in the driver’s seat, with the lights flashing and siren sounding.

The nursery children have new high visibility safety vests to wear when they are out and about on their frequent trips into Hungerford town. These smart vests have reflective strips and the name and logo of the nursery on the back.

Neale Marney MBE from the West Berkshire Rapid Response Car also popped in to speak to the children and explain about staying safe on the roads, to make sure that they don’t need his services!

Deputy Nursery Manager, Claire Taylor, explained: “It is very important to us that the children understand how to stay safe when they are out and about. We are really grateful to PC Drewitt and Neale Marney for talking to the children today and helping them to understand how important road safety is. The children look great in their new vests and we are looking forward to many trips out in them over the hot summer months.

Fathers Day in November

Little Jogs Day Nursery held a ‘Fathers’ Day’ on Saturday 15/11/08 with an invitation extended exclusively to the Dads whose children attended the nursery.

Nursery Manager, Elena Allan, explained: “Mostly we see Mums when the children are dropped off and again when they are picked up, so this was really a chance for the Dads to come in with their child and see what they do when they are with us, examples of their work and how much fun they have learning.

“We had a really good turnout and I’m not sure who were the most proud; the children showing off to their Dads or the Dads discovering how much their children have achieved?”

Sat with three-year-old Joel was dad Ian Nesbit, who felt it was a great idea for fathers who otherwise might not see their child at the nursery. He said: “It is nice to be hands on with Joel; my own father was very busy when I was young and I have vowed I would do as much as I could with this one.”

Another dad was Vic Smeeton, who, in the midst of a major wooden block construction project with three-and-a-half-year-old Billy, said: “Most days he is down here I tend to bring him and pick him up, but you only see a little bit of what he does – mostly he just runs in and then I’m off to work.

“This is really nice to have the chance to see how much he enjoys being here and for him to show me the kind of things he does.”

Diwali

As a nursery we celebrated the Hindu festival of “Diwali”.

The children in the pre-school were told about this festival in a story that was age- appropriate for them and then they lit candles and put up fairy lights.

All children in the nursery decorated biscuits and took them home. They also made some lovely pictures with lots of different colours and patterns.

Harvest Festival

It was worth giving thanks for the sunshine as well as the harvest when 18 children and nine staff from Little Jogs Day Nursery walked down to St. Lawrence’s Church in Hungerford for their very own Harvest Festival on Thursday last week (October 2).

Once the children had arrived at the church they walked down the alter and took turns laying down the offerings their parents had donated for the service. The Reverend Andrew Sawyer then asked the children to sit on the floor around him as he explained the offerings were to thank God for the harvest, before saying a short prayer.

Nursery Nurse Clare Taylor said: “The children all loved being at the church and joined in the conversation and answered questions. A couple of parents also joined us for the lovely service and the walk back to the nursery in the sunshine; they were all chattering about it and taking turns to thank one another for being so polite. It was great fun.”

Big Toddle

On a Friday afternoon a group of children, staff and parents took part in a toddle around the John O Gaunt School playing fields.

After the walk, parents and children enjoyed a lovely party back at the nursery.
